Discovered the work of 18th century artist Gustave Doré today.
This guy is my new favourite. I’ve been looking at a lot of medieval woodcut work recently with a new eye of appreciation, but this is just unbelievable. These pieces are engraved into steel.
I love the contrast and the nature of the imagery, especially the second piece. I’m also a sucker for anything that deals with vastly ambitious religious imagery. There’s something so cinematic about his work, as his subjects always seem to be quite energetic and laden with momentum.
Desperate to reference him in the next music video. Hoping to do something in black and white with the new Red Epic Monochrome. I was very impressed with the images achieved in the new Justin Timblerlake and Woodkid videos.
